Detailed threat analysis

What the regulator says

In press release 2024-134 (17 September 2024), the SEC announced a complaint against CoinW6 in the Central District of California. The SEC alleges that from about July 2022 to at least December 2023, participants posed as young, wealthy professionals, contacted investors through LinkedIn and Instagram, and built romantic relationships over WhatsApp. They then allegedly persuaded investors to open accounts on a fake crypto platform, claiming daily returns of up to 3% from staking, mining and yield farming. The SEC alleges investor funds were misappropriated, reported profits and balances were fictitious, and that when investors tried to withdraw they were asked for extra payments for taxes or fees, told assets were frozen in a law enforcement inquiry, or threatened with release of private messages. The SEC charges unregistered offerings and antifraud violations. The release does not list website domains.

How this type of scam usually works

Relationship investment scams, sometimes called pig butchering, rely on weeks or months of rapport before an 'opportunity' is mentioned. The platform is typically fake, and demands for fees or taxes to unlock funds are a hallmark.

How to check a firm yourself

Search the firm on the NFA's BASIC database (for futures and forex) and on the SEC's Investment Adviser Public Disclosure and FINRA BrokerCheck tools. Check the CFTC RED List and SEC investor alerts. Be cautious of anyone who contacted you unprompted, and confirm a firm's registration through contact details you find independently, not those supplied by the firm.

What to do if you dealt with CoinW6

  1. 01Stop sending money or crypto and do not pay any further fees, taxes or release charges.
